  Sunken Forest

Here you can see Japanese spruces and red pines from 28,000 years ago spread over a 1km area. Spaced out about 1-2m apart in a roughly 30cm layer of peat, this stretch of thousands of trees is said to be the largest such array in the world. The conifers were submerged and their roots preserved due to flooding and other sudden environmental effects of the last Ice Age (approx. 80-20,000 years ago).
